In plastic injection molding, selecting the right surface finish for your mold tool is far more than just a cosmetic choice. The mold surface finish directly influences part aesthetics, tactile feel, optical reflection, friction during ejection, and even the visibility of minor molding defects such as sink marks and weld lines.

Industrial designers and mechanical engineers must balance aesthetic desires against manufacturing realities. Specifying an unnecessarily high mirror polish can inflate tooling costs by 20%, whereas choosing a heavy texture without increasing draft angles will cause severe part dragging and ejection failure. 💡Intertech Tooling Pro Tip:

Do not specify an SPI A-1 finish unless absolute optical clarity or high gloss is mandatory. An SPI A-1 polish requires skilled hand-buffing with diamond paste and hardened steel (like S136 or NAK80), significantly increasing tooling lead time and cost compared to a standard SPI B-2 or C-1 finish.


Chemical etching (photolithography) applies intricate pattern textures directly onto the steel mold cavity. Mold-Tech (MT) is the globally recognized standard for chemical textures, offering thousands of grain patterns ranging from leather and woodgrain to fine geometric matte finishes.

The VDI 3400 standard (established by the Verein Deutscher Ingenieure) is widely used across Europe and Asia. Unlike chemical etching, VDI finishes are created directly during Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) spark erosion.

Cost-Effective Matte Texturing via EDM:

VDI standards range from VDI 12 (very smooth, Ra 0.40 µm) to VDI 45 (extremely rough, Ra 18.0 µm). Generating a textured finish directly via CNC EDM saves the extra cost and turnaround time of shipping the steel out for third-party chemical etching.


The single most common mistake in textured mold design is insufficient draft angle. Textures create micro-undercuts on vertical walls. If the draft angle is too small, the plastic part will drag against the texture during ejection, causing severe scratch marks or whitening.
