Liquid Silicone Rubber (LSR) MoldingGuide: Properties, Tooling & Overmolding Applications

Liquid Silicone Rubber (LSR) has rapidly transformed modern manufacturing across medical devices, baby care products, automotive seals, and IP67/IP68 waterproof electronics. Unlike conventional thermoplastics that are melted by heat and cooled to solidify, LSR is a platinum-cured elastomer supplied as a two-part liquid polymer (Component A and B).

When injected into a heated mold cavity, LSR undergoes a chemical reaction called thermal vulcanization, cross-linking into a permanently flexible, bio-compatible elastomer. This process grants LSR exceptional thermal stability, chemical inertness, and extreme tear resistance, making it an irreplaceable material for high-performance applications.

💡Intertech Polymer Pro Tip:

If your product requires repeated autoclave sterilization, continuous exposure to harsh UV/ozone, or contact with human tissue (medical implants or baby nipples), LSR is superior to TPE. TPE melts when exposed to high heat, whereas thermoset LSR retains its mechanical elasticity permanently.


LSR mold manufacturing operates on a reverse thermal principle compared to plastic injection molds:

  • Cold Runner System (CRS): While plastic molds keep the cavity cool and the runners hot, LSR molds must keep the manifold cooled (to prevent premature vulcanization of the liquid resin) while heating the mold cavity to 170°C – 200°C to cure the part instantly.
  • Vacuum De-aeration: Because liquid silicone flows as easily as water under pressure, any air trapped inside the mold cavity will cause severe voids or burning. LSR molds require an integrated vacuum system that evacuates air from the sealed cavity milliseconds before injection begins.

The single greatest manufacturing hurdle in LSR mold making is controlling flash (thin excess material bleeding through parting lines). Due to LSR’s ultra-low viscosity, liquid silicone will bleed into parting line gaps as small as 0.002 mm to 0.005 mm (2 to 5 microns).

Precision CNC & EDM Requirements for LSR Molds:

To prevent flash without over-clamping, the mold parting surfaces, sliders, and core pins must be machined using high-precision CNC high-speed milling and EDM within ±0.002mm tolerances. Perfect shut-off surfaces and custom spring-loaded sealing valves are mandatory.
